UrosIntroduction:

After being diagnosed with infertility and treated for two years, Uros’s parents finally managed to get pregnant and thought that was the end of their troubles. But they were wrong…

The Condition:

Uros was born preterm in 2009. A couple of hours after his birth, he was diagnosed with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, which is highly dangerous, even deadly. For a month and a half his parents weren’t allowed to visit him because of the strict policy of the Institute of Neonatology in Belgrade. He was receiving a CMV therapy for 47 days twice a day, but the virus began to affect all his organs, leaving him with severe cerebral palsy. Since his brain was also infected, there were high chances of him becoming blind, deaf, dumb or mentally challenged. One can only image the agony his parents were facing.

When he was only 3,5 months old, he had a serious brain surgery due to enlarged brain ventricles and just when the family thought the agony would soon end, 20 days after the first operation some complications occurred and he had to undergo another one.

Treatments:

Uros has undergone three surgeries so far (in 2010 in Belgrade, and in 2011 and 2012 at the Stammzellen clinic in Vienna). The first time he had a shunt placed and the other two involved a stem cell therapy. Now he’s able to hold his head up, he regained some motor control in his right arm and, most important of all, he’s sane and understands everything. But there’s so much fight ahead of him.

Funding Goals:

Another two operations in the pipeline for 2013 and 2014 and follow-up treatments, especially the Therasuit therapies, should enable him to sit on his own, use both of his arms, talk, and, ultimately, walk. That’s when he and his parents will actually begin to live normally.
